Anaheim, CA — November 1, 2012
Loara High School marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 50th anniversary with a grand event on Thursday. The day was filled with nostalgia, pride, and a strong sense of community as alumni, students, staff, and special guests gathered to honor the school’s rich history.
Loara High, which first opened its doors on November 1, 1962, has long been a cherished institution in Anaheim, producing generations of students who have excelled both academically and athletically. The golden anniversary was no small affair, and its success was the result of careful planning by a dedicated group of alumni and educators. Notable figures involved in organizing the event included David Sporn (Class of 1990), Paul Chylinski (Class of 1982), Chuck McCance (Class of 1974), Susan Nicholas (Class of 1965), and former teachers Gary and Jeanette Cleaveland.
In true Saxon spirit, the event featured lively performances by the ASB, the marching band, choir, JROTC, cheerleaders, and the color guard. Together, they put on a dazzling display of talent and school pride. Meanwhile, the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) played a sweet role in the festivities, providing over 2,000 cupcakes for the students.
The anniversary event was led by Loara’s new principal, John Briquelet, who served as the emcee. Special guest speaker, Superintendent Elizabeth Novack, addressed the crowd, highlighting the legacy and achievements of the school. Joining them were alumni, former teachers, district board members, and other dignitaries, including Alden Esping (former Health and Activities Director), Dr. Jan Billings (former AUHSD Superintendent), and Beverly Nicholas (school nurse). These figures, all of whom have had a lasting impact on Loara’s community, were recognized for their contributions.
One of the most memorable moments came early in the day when Gwen Stefani, a Loara alumna and world-renowned singer, made a surprise appearance in a video message during morning announcements. “Happy 50th Anniversary, Saxons!” she exclaimed, much to the delight of students and staff. The video was also shared during the Homecoming Assembly, adding to the celebratory spirit.
The campus was buzzing with excitement throughout the day. Many students and teachers remarked on the uplifting atmosphere, expressing how the event brought out a deep sense of appreciation for the school. “I’ve never seen the campus so united and energized,” said one staff member.
The anniversary culminated with a pep rally and ribbon-cutting ceremony during the lunch period, a fitting tribute to Loara’s legacy. As the festivities concluded, it was clear that Loara’s past, present, and future were deeply interconnected, and this celebration was a poignant reminder of the school’s enduring impact on its community.
Here’s to the next 50 years of Saxon pride!
