Each fall, schools and universities across the nation celebrate National GEAR UP Week during the last week of September to highlight the impact of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. GEAR UP is a federal grant program designed to support low-income and first-generation students in preparing for, and succeeding in, education beyond high school. The goal is to empower students with the tools, resources, and support they need to achieve their college and career dreams.
At Cal State Fullerton, GEAR UP is a comprehensive, multi-year initiative that partners with local middle and high schools, including Loara High School, to provide academic enrichment, college and career advising, family engagement opportunities, and more. Through the CSUF GEAR UP program, students receive early exposure to college knowledge, mentoring, and continuous guidance, ensuring they are well-prepared for their postsecondary journey. CSUF GEAR UP serves as a bridge between students and higher education, helping them turn long-term goals into real-world opportunities.
Our Class of 2027 GEAR UP Cohort participated in a full week of engaging activities during National GEAR UP Week (Sept. 22–25), designed to inspire, inform, and connect students with their future goals.
The week kicked off with Manifest Monday, where students expressed their academic, career, and personal aspirations by filling out colorful goal cards. On Tuesday, students competed in a fast-paced College Gold Rush Blooket game, answering questions related to college readiness, the GEAR UP program, and the A-G course requirements necessary for CSU and UC admissions.
Wednesday offered a more relaxed environment with College Coloring Day. Students selected coloring pages featuring various college logos and spent lunch coloring while engaging in meaningful conversations about higher education with staff. These casual “college chats” helped make the idea of college feel more tangible and approachable.
The week wrapped up on Thursday with Braid Your Intentions, a creative bracelet-making activity where students reflected on their future college and career paths. As they braided their bracelets, they shared intentions and aspirations—symbolizing the threads of their personal journeys. To celebrate a successful week, participating students were treated to a special lunch from Raising Cane’s.
National GEAR UP Week is more than just a celebration; it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when students are given the support, access, and encouragement they deserve.
