On February 21, 2020, Mr. David Sporn’s (class of 1990) advanced art classes completed one thousand hand-painted butterflies made out of aluminum. The art piece was displayed on the fence facing Euclid Street on Loara High School’s campus.
In late November 2020, the AIPP (Art In Public Places) Campus Beautiful Award was announced in a virtual Anaheim council meeting to be awarded to Loara for this four-month-long, butterfly art installation. The award is administered to outstanding campuses by the Anaheim Beautiful committee quarterly.
Although this year has been especially challenging for high schools everywhere, not excluding AUHSD schools, this art piece encapsulates the spirit of Loara High School students and their resilience throughout the pandemic.
Only a few weeks before school became virtual- after March 13th, 2020- the artwork was completed and the quote alongside the piece read: “Until you spread your wings, you’ll have no idea how
far you can fly.” These words echo against the empty backdrop of what used to be a bustling high school. Students must now work harder to “spread their wings” in the wake of COVID-19, which has altered the lives of all high schoolers and inhibited not only their educational potential but their social lives as well. Art is one of the few things that breathes life into our temporarily vacant campus.
