An estimated 87 seniors recently participated in a field trip to Cypress College, where they had the chance to explore the campus and learn about various community college opportunities and programs. Upon arrival, students were welcomed by Cypress College staff and other students, as well as volunteers from different high schools. To receive Cypress College merchandise, each student filled out a card with their name and information. The “goodie bag” included a bright yellow tote filled with informational flyers and other items.
The visit kicked off with an assembly in the Cypress College gym. The event included a lively rally, where Cypress athletes and volunteers competed in different challenges. Saxon student Angela Ngo joined the rally, showcasing an impressive swing that sent a baseball flying across the gym, earning her cheers from the crowd despite narrowly missing victory. Following the rally, Cypress College staff handed out additional items, including plush horses wearing Cypress t-shirts and college-branded shirts.
Next, students were invited to participate in a trivia game where each competitor represented their school. Angela was selected again and this time emerged victorious, answering the trivia question correctly.
During lunch, students had the opportunity to visit a variety of informational stations that highlighted areas such as international studies, veterans’ resources, political science, and computer science. The stations provided valuable insights, along with more “goodies” for students to take home. Once students collected enough stamps from different stations, they were rewarded with a free burger and fries from The Habit Burger Grill.
After lunch, students were encouraged to explore the campus. Some ventured into the art gallery, where they admired several pieces, including a striking set of 3D-printed monkeys that captivated many. Others took time to appreciate the architecture around campus, including buildings designed by notable architect Sergio Ocadiz.
Reflecting on the experience, Saxon Mia Zapata shared her thoughts: “The vending machines were first class. Yum.” The Cypress College vending machines were a hit with the students, offering a range of snacks and even hot, ready-to-eat options like pizza.
The field trip also highlighted the benefits of starting a college journey at a community college. Community colleges offer an affordable path to higher education, allowing students to complete general education courses before transferring to a four-year university. Additionally, community colleges like Cypress provide hands-on training programs, associate degrees, and resources that help students enter the workforce with valuable skills. By completing their A-G requirements, students in the Anaheim Union High School District keep their options open for both community colleges and four-year universities, expanding their academic and career choices.
Overall, the Cypress College field trip was an engaging and informative experience that offered Saxon seniors a firsthand look at the benefits of community college and campus life, while encouraging them to make the most of their high school education to ensure they have the widest range of opportunities after graduation.
