Students buzz with excitement, their energy spreading throughout the crowd. Why are they so thrilled? Well, our GEAR UP field trips have begun! Over the past few weeks, on October 29th, November 8th, and November 12th, our 10th graders embarked on an incredible journey to the University of Southern California and the Natural History Museum. Stunning architecture, fascinating history, and delicious food made it a memorable experience. I had the opportunity to join the trip myself, and I can confidently say it was an unforgettable adventure.
The day began with a bus ride to Los Angeles, leading us to the University of Southern California. As we arrived, students were greeted by the grandeur of the city-like campus. Awe filled the air as they took in the towering architecture of libraries and study halls, surrounded by grassy parks, fountains, and the timeless charm of ivy-covered brick walls. Every building featured intricate statues and signs highlighting the campus’s beauty. “I loved the architecture at USC,” shared Genesis Arellano.
The next stop, and arguably the highlight for many students, was the free lunch buffet! In one of the campus dining halls, tables were laden with mouthwatering options: pasta, drinks, ice cream, salads, pizza—you name it! There was something for everyone, though not all students were equally impressed. The cafeteria, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, was bathed in natural light, making the experience even more enjoyable. “The food was good, better than expected,” noted Michael Bao. “[It had] a large variety of options.”
After lunch, the adventure continued as students headed to the Natural History Museum, conveniently located across the road from USC. With its impressive collection of fossils, technological exhibits, and precious minerals, the museum invited students to explore the wonders of Earth’s history. “The museum was a wonderful adventure,” said Michael Bao. “While our time there was short—only an hour—the rushed experience was a terrific exploration of our world’s biodiversity.” I couldn’t agree more! For me, the bird section was the highlight, showcasing a variety of species, from flamingos to a bald eagle and even an albatross. If only we had more time to uncover every corner of its awe-inspiring halls.
Overall, the field trip was a resounding success, filled with learning, excitement, and unforgettable moments. Students walked away with a greater appreciation for college life and a deeper connection to the history of our planet. While the buzz has quieted and the excitement has slowed, the memories we made and the lessons we learned will stay with us for years to come. Now, we eagerly await the next GEAR UP adventure.
